Jenkins OX-5 Command-Aire Ready for First Flight, and Airmaster Recover

Posted in Members | November 08, 2011

Bob Jenkins, Jr sent us an update on the projects that he's working on with his father. Bob Jenkins Senior and his Airmaster are regulars at the Blakesburg fly-in, we look forward to seeing it back with new fabric.

My dad and I have the 1928 Command-Aire restoration all finished, just waiting on some FAA paperwork for the first flight. Here is a video of the engine run.

We have been working on a recover job on my dad's 1938 Cessna Airmaster. It has had cotton on it since my dad restored it back in 1974. We have the engine off, the interior out, fabric off and the wing off. My dad's friend Charlie Mormon came by and helped us remove the wing. Here are a few pictures and a link to the online photo album for it.

I also attached a nice picture of all three airplanes at the farm before we began disassembly of the Airmaster.

Lettering on the Pemberton Waco Wings

Addison Pemberton writes:

We have now finished a very hard push with the decision to do all the really cool wing graphics which included big gold trimmed numbers. This was a ton of work over the last 10 late nights but well worth it as you can see in the photos.

Tuesday night our volunteer work party will HANG and rig the wings!!! More pix this week with an assembled airplane.

So far we are 3500 late night hours into the project and as of last night $137K all costs to date including every sheet of sandpaper, washer and cotter pin. This includes $15,000 in hardware and do-dads from Aircraft Spruce. This is very close to the final cost as there is nothing else to buy but some gas and insurance in the spring.

We are finding that airplane rebuilding costs seem to go up about 30% in parts cost every 5 years. We built my 450 Stearman in 1987 for $28,000. R985 Pratt and Whitney overhaul in 1996 for the Staggerwing was $12,000 today it is $35K.

I wonder what a hot dog will cost in 20 years?

Posted in News | October 31, 2011

Just a little less than a week before we hold our 16th annual "Pumpkin Drop" here at Antique Airfield. At present the weather is predicted to be sunny with a high of 55 and winds from the SSW at 15 mph. Sounds like a great day to come and drop pumpkins! Check out this slo-mo video of a pumpkin's final few seconds, taken at last years event.

Also pictured are last years winning bomb crew (pilot Dallas Grimm & bombadier Luke Pieper) with the much coveted major award presented to each years winner! Let us know if you plan to attend.

And last but not least, who could forget the fun of a B-25 carpet bombing pumpkins in 2004:
