The memorial commemorates those members who have "gone west", or passed on.
The memorial stone was designed and carved by the late Bob Gast, and construction was done by a number of AAA volunteers, including Bob Gast and Ron Ryburn.
Many of the memorial stones are native stone from the members home state.
Inscribed on the stone is this verse written by Dr. L.R. Mittendorf, DDS, in 1976:
GONE WEST
As you pass this way, please pause to reflect,
Upon the members to whom we pay the last respect.
They loved their old airplanes and gave to us their best,
And now have joined the squadron which is always heading west.
The squadron grows larger with the passing of every year,
But as long as Antique Field exists, you will find their presence here.
