AAA Names New President

In July of 1953 the oldest antique airplane was fifty and not flying much. Jets were beginning to squeeze props from the sky, and airplanes from the 1920s and 30s were disappearing, some barely old enough to vote. Progress has a way of trampling the pioneers until they’re gone, which is when new generations look around wondering, "Hey, whatever happened to...?"

Sixty-one years ago Robert L. Taylor - pilot and mechanic - saw the future and saved the past. He formed the Antique Airplane Association (AAA) in Ottumwa, Iowa at a time when many of the airplanes we now consider classics hadn't even been built.

Now, after six decades serving as AAA president—longer than the leaders of any other aviation organization (EAA, AOPA, FAA...) — Bob has stepped aside to become AAA's Chairman Emeritus. At a recent AAA Board meeting, the Directors elected pilot/mechanic and AAA Executive Director, Brent Taylor, to become the new AAA President. Not since Michael took over from Vito Corleone has there been such a momentous change in leadership and, yet, one that preserves the link between past and present.

Robert L. Taylor may have handed over the reins, but you'll still find him at home on Antique Airfield in Blakesburg, Iowa, making sure this new kid "Keeps The Antiques Flying!"

FAA Order on Historical Aircraft Type Certificates Released

There's important news today for the owners/restorers of antique & classic aircraft. The FAA has finally released order 8110.120 - Processing Surrendered, Abandoned, and Historical Aircraft Type Certificates.

This order (primarily the Historical Aircraft Type Certificate section) is in large part due to the efforts of US Congressman Sam Graves (MO), Aviation Foundation of America President (and AAA Lifetime member) Greg Herrick, AAA Executive Director Brent Taylor & AAA member Mike Pangia in their efforts since 2002, to allow the owners/restorers of antique/classic aircraft access to the approved data they need to restore and maintain their aircraft.

We have just started the review of this document and the section dealing with "Historical Aircraft Type Certificates" appears at first glance straight forward. However, other parts of this order seem to contain language that's contradictory and somewhat at odds within the content of order itself. We'll keep our members and fans updated, after a complete review of this FAA order.

Join the AAA Record Breakers

Featuring Curtiss Robin and Stinson 108 Aircraft
AAA/APM Invitational Fly-In, September 2-7 2015

Over the past 60+ years the Antique Airplane Association has had many members whose accomplishments and flights were officially recognized by the National Aeronautics Association (NAA) and/or the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) as record flights. That list includes such famous names as Benny Howard, E.M. "Matty" Laird, Gen. Benjamin S. Kelsey, Duane Wallace, Kenneth Hunter and others. The Board of Directors of the Antique Airplane Association & the Air Power Museum are therefore excited to announce that the 2015 AAA-APM Invitational Fly-In at Antique Airfield (September 2nd – 7th, 2015) will honor those record setting airplanes and their pilots with our "Join the AAA Record Breakers" fly-in theme.

To make the "Record Breakers" theme really come alive, we will be sending out personal invitations to all AAA members who currently own and fly antique, classic & neo-classic aircraft which were record holding aircraft, be it altitude, speed, endurance etc, or a representative type. At present we are in the process of identifying those airplanes fitting that description but already have two Curtiss Robins (one of which is a famous endurance record holder while the other was the refueling plane on four different endurance flights) promising to attend.

But what will make this event really special, is the opportunity for any AAA member in any pre-1956 aircraft (with a standard airworthiness certificate) to "Join the AAA Record Breakers". In cooperation with the NAA, any AAA member that wishes, can apply for (with the appropriate paperwork and fee to the NAA) a Sporting Performances license and set a point-to-point performance record from their home base to Antique Airfield (if at least 50nm from IA27).

Of course we're planning special recognition for those participating. From getting the checkered flag as they land (via our ATC Flagmen), to a special paddock where the official paperwork will be signed and photos taken, all are part of what's in store for those that choose to participate. We're hopeful that representatives from the NAA will be on hand as well, to act as the official observers of these flights.

We're also happy to announce that the two featured aircraft for this year's 2015 AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in will be the Curtiss Robin and Stinson 108 series of aircraft. The Curtiss Robin of course is representative of the "Record Breaking" aircraft theme and will help us commemorate this colorful era of aviation history, while the Stinson 108 is representative of one the most successful post-war aircraft produced. As well, we certainly hope that some of the Stinson 108 owners will participate in becoming an "AAA Record Breaker" too.

As you can tell, we're excited about this unique opportunity to commemorate those record breaking airplanes and pilots of the past. We hope you will be able to join us in 2015 for this "Record Breaking" celebration!

Jared said: "We had a lot of old birds, record attendance, smoked a record amount of briskets (38), great fun, and perfect weather. This event, I have no doubt, is the reason this antique Texas field remains open."

Well the 2014 AAA/APM Fly-in will certainly go down as one of our most memorable events, though more likely in an infamous sort of way than due to record attendance. We had a very challenging week with weather both here and across the country that cut our attendance figures by 30-35% over our 2013 record attendance. Still, even with all the challenges we faced, be it via mother nature or human nature, we had a safe event.

The AAA/APM Fly-in takes a massive effort yearly to prepare for and execute. It would be impossible for our small full time staff of four people to accomplish this task. Fortunately we have a loyal and growing number of volunteers who spend their time, talents and money to help make the AAA/APM Fly-in happen. Without their help and dedication the AAA/APM Fly-in is simply not possible. So with apologies in advance to anyone I may have missed, if you enjoyed our 61st annual event, make certain to "Thank" the following 101 individuals and 4 service organizations for their hard work and dedication in making the 2014 AAA/APM Fly-in a safe and fun event for all participants.

Update on the Spirit of St Louis replica in Washington state

Kristopher Hull sent us an update on the Spirit of St. Louis replication being built in Washington State:

Last summer I sent in some photos of John Norman's SoSL replica under construction, and I figured I would send in some more detailing the progress on it, and a plea for help!

In the past year, John has finished framing out the wings and has hung the wing on the fuselage to properly build up the attach fittings and hardware, as well as fit check everything. The main tank has been completed, and true to the original, it is made from riveted stainless with solder sealant. The tank was just recently installed into the fuselage to check its fit, and to assemble the support cradle. It fit with 1/8 inch clearance all the way around! The next steps are to complete the build on the wing and cover it, and completely strip the fuselage for final welding and paint before final assembly of all components this winter.

As for the plea for help, John is in urgent need of a set of 9 intake valves, all 18 valve springs, and a complete set of piston wrist pins for his original Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine. Without these, the project is dead in the water. If you know of source for these parts, please contact John Norman at or through his website.
