Sunday July 23rd saw the first arrival for the AAA/APM Fly-in some five plus weeks away. Ninety year young Jack Greiner arrived at Antique Airfield in his recently completed Pietenpol Air Camper. Jack had flown the Continental powered Piet' from his home in Longmont, CO to the Pietenpol fly-in at Brodhead, WI over the weekend, then onto Antique Airfield.
Jack's arrival is quite possibly the earliest arrival we have ever had for the fly-in!

Longtime Antique Airfield supporter Sparky Barnes Sargent has just published a new book, Tales of Timeless Wings. The promo blurb is:
Tales of Timeless Wings conveys the stories of more than a dozen pilots who have devoted a great portion of their lives to the preservation of aircraft that have been in their families for decades. This collection of stories highlights each family’s participation in flying, maintaining, and restoring these airplanes - in many cases, as they passed from one generation to the next. A number of these aircraft were even designed and built by family members. It is pilots such as these who are safeguarding and perpetuating our aviation history - and having fun while doing so! 236 pages with 401 photos. You can order a copy from this website. Everybody has been busy up here at 3W5 for the past several days getting ready for the fly in. Grass is being mowed, airplanes are being washed, and final preparations are being made to welcome vintage airplane enthusiasts from around the region. Here at the museum, everybody has been busy trying to get ready for the weekend. In addition to getting ready, work continues on some of the airplanes, including the newest short wing Piper, the Vagabond. There was also some airplane shuffling that took place this week. The Call Air that was so popular at the Arlington Fly-In this year was moved into one of the main display hangars where it sits happy after getting so much scrubbing and polishing. We’re looking forward to another fantastic fly-in again in 2011, and hope you’ll be able to join us here in Concrete. More information about the fly-in can be found here. Drop by and say hello.
First Flight of Stearman M-2 Speedmail

Alan Lopez has news about his Bull Stearman's first flight after restoration. Alan says: Stearman M-2 Speedmail C9055 flew for the first time since restoration on July 20, 2011. The flight was at Robbinsville Airport in New Jersey where the aircraft was restored by Posey Bros. The flight was uneventful. The first flight is dedicated to the many people whose talent and toil over many years made it possible. It was the first time a Bull Stearman had been in the air since October 8, 1939.
In response to numerous inquiries, the answer is that we hope to be able to take the Stearman M-2 to Blakesburg and Galesburg. However, we have quite a bit of flight testing ahead, and, of course, we have to get the pilot up to speed.

The semi-remodel and slight expansion of the Pilot's Pub took a big step forward this hot July day with the arrivals of booths and tables. AAA members Frank & Connie Weber drove down from St.Peter, MN with a load of booths and tables that came from their restaurant, the City Grille and Pub. Luke Pieper and Ken Marth will be installing these booths in the Pilot's Pub in time for the AAA/APM Fly-in now just six weeks away. Thanks to Frank and Connie for their contribution to the comfort of our patrons at the Pilot's Pub.
Truly a truck load of booths and tables destined for use in the Pilot's Pub
