Bleriot is First Arrival for the Fly-In - Video

Posted in News | August 04, 2010

With exactly four weeks until the start of the AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in, today (Aug. 4th) saw the first arrival for the Fly-in. Eric Presten and family arrived at Antique Airfield with their Bleriot replica in tow. The Bleriot is one of the key airplanes for this years event being a tie-in to "Iowa's 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight".

The Presten's had the Bleriot on the American Barnstormer's Tour earlier this summer as well as on display at Oshkosh last week. It currently is stored in Hangar #2 awaiting Eric's return in a few weeks to be assembled and flown (weather permitting) to give all our attendees a look back at aviation's earliest days. It will in fact, be the first time an aircraft with wing warping will have been flown from Antique Airfield. While it was a rainy dreary day here at Antique Airfield, Eric brightened everyone's mood by running the engine a bit before putting the Bleriot to bed in Hangar #2. With short stacks the Rotec Radial has a distinctive and most likely period sound to it. We look forward to seeing the Bleriot take to the skies from Antique Airfield in a few weeks.

Enjoy this short video (by Ben Taylor) of the engine run.

Rob Bach's Weekend Report

Posted in Members | August 01, 2010

Rob Bach sent us a report on What We Did Last Weekend:

Ted Davis flew the Piet at Brodhead while I flew the New Standard. (photos Will Hamilton) Ted scared up a few rides in the D25 at sunset and I shepherded Nephew Will and star pupil Pat Zakrzewski on a tour around Illinois and Wisconsin ending at OSH. Pat Owns the Clipper, Brad Williams owns the Piet I built. (photos by me).

These two airplanes (and two young men) have become fast friends.

Both airplanes will be at AAA for the Big Dance.

Dick Ramsey's Retractable Luscombe?

Posted in Members | August 01, 2010
Dick Ramsey of the Texas Chapter sent us a photo of his Luscombe in a legless condition: "My Luscombe is still up on a stand in the hangar. We're trying to get those things which have been done wrong or ignored concerning the main gear, corrected. Some of the bolts needed a jackhammer. Had to take the oleo piston out to be chromed back to specs. Also trying to eliminate some the weight on the nose by getting rid of all the bondo on the cowling. The most expensive bit will be the prep and repainting by someone that knows which end of a paint gun that the paint comes out of."

Suddenly days of work and piles of parts become a wing: Russell Williams did a trial fit up of half of his St. Louis Cardinal project's wing parts. Now for the not-so-visual details... and there's still another whole half to go!
